On May 2, 2024, Professor Hermann J. Helgert joined GW Engineering Dean John Lach in a signing ceremony to establish the Helgert Family Endowed Fellowship in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). Helgert’s generous contribution to the department will be used to recruit and retain exceptional full-time doctoral students within the ECE department. Also at the signing were Dr. Suresh Subramaniam, Vice Provost for Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs, and Dr. Tarek El-Ghazawi, ECE Department Chair.

For nearly 50 years, Helgert has been a GW Engineering faculty member and conducts research in the area of communication networks, with a specialization in networks employing wireless communication channels. Three of his immediate family members, including his wife and two children, have received degrees from GW. Together, the Helgert family shares a gratifying tenure at the university.

Helgert’s motivation for giving back to GW Engineering stems from a deep sense of gratitude for all the university has provided to him and his family. The newly established fellowship will exist permanently in the school to allow many Helgert Fellows to be supported in their Ph.D. studies by GW Engineering for years to come.
