Air Force Office of Scientific Research: Dr. Volker Sorger received a Young Investigator Program award from AFSOR for research related to photonic computing.
National Science Foundation: Working under an NSF CAREER grant, Dr. Gabriel Parmer studies how to make computer operating systems essentially self-repairing.
National Institutes of Health:
Dr. Lijie Grace Zhang received a prestigious NIH Director’s New Innovator Award for her work, which aims to find a solution for treating large tissue defects in patients.
NASA: Dr. Zoe Szajnfarber works with NASA to develop new R&D evaluation metrics to identify institutional levers to encourage innovation.
Department of Energy:
Drs. Philippe Bardet, Elias Balaras, and Majid Manzari use GW’s earthquake simulator to simulate fluid flow in a nuclear reactor in order to understand and refine the safety limits of a reactor.
National Gallery of Art: Using technologies developed for biomedical engineering, Dr. Murray Loew works with the National Gallery of Art to digitally peel back the layers of paint on some of the world’s great art and look beneath the surface to help better understand and conserve these masterpieces.
Blue Plains Wastewater Treatment Plant: Environmental engineering faculty and students use one of the world’s largest wastewater treatment plants as a real-world laboratory to improve the water quality of the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
