As part of its mission to give students access to holistic and professional development, the GW Engineering Career Services Center created the Career Chat series designed to help students navigate the often daunting process of transitioning to the workforce. These informal chats allow students to explore the resources available to them within the school and across GW and gain actionable advice tailored to their goals, with the latest installment held on February 10.
“While students often associate Career Services with larger career fairs, smaller, informal opportunities to connect are just as, if not more, valuable. The Career Chat series is our way of building relationships with students and guiding them through their college-to-career journey,” said Chalvonna Smith, director of the GW Engineering Career Services Center.
GW Engineering Career Services began this series in the Fall of 2024 to offer students the most relevant and timely information in today’s ever-changing job market. Each chat features snacks and includes six discussion questions covering a wide range of topics, from setting expectations for recruiting events to exploring how clubs and extracurricular activities can enhance one’s professional journey. Attendees are encouraged to raise their own questions, as one student’s questions will likely resonate with others.
“In every career chat session, our goal isn’t just to answer questions–it’s to give students the right tools, resources, and confidence to take the next step in their careers. We take the time to research what’s available, not just within the engineering school but across other departments and schools as well, so we can connect students with the best opportunities out there. Whether it’s a career fair, an alumni networking event, or a specialized program for job seekers, we make sure they know what’s available and how to make the most out of it,” said Adonia Sequeira, a Career Services Fellow.
Through these meaningful discussions, students gain practical strategies for networking, job searching, and overcoming common career obstacles. Smith noted that a common career concern she hears about is job search anxiety. Whether it's due to finding employment as an international student or lacking experience as a freshman, she reminds these students to remain persistent and intentional in their search.
“The best advice I’ve received applies here: ‘The world belongs to those who show up.’ By consistently showing up for the right opportunities, success is inevitable–it’s just a matter of time and preparation,” said Smith.
By fostering a dynamic, student-centered space, the Career Chat series is making a tangible impact on how students approach their future careers. To make the most out of these valuable opportunities, students are encouraged to explore the wealth of online career resources the GW Engineering Career Services offers. Also, don’t miss out on the remaining Career Chats for Spring 2025, taking place on February 25, March 25, April 7, and April 22. Stay connected and put yourself at the heart of your career journey!
