Research:
Prof. Poorvi Vora (CS) was awarded a three-year $666,054 National Science Foundation grant for her project "TWC: Open-Audit Voting Systems—Protocol Models and Properties." Prof. Vora is the principal investigator on the grant and is working in collaboration with her co-PI, Prof. Michael Clarkson. The project will focus on three main problems: 1) the rigorous study of the properties of in-person voting protocols with human participants; 2) the development of new voting protocols; and 3) the development of a high-assurance software library for voting system design.

Conferences & Presentations:
Prof. Taeyoung Lee (MAE) was invited to speak at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the Seoul National University and the Astronomy Department at Yonsei University in South Korea on September 3-4. He gave talks on the recent developments of geometric mechanics and control with applications to complex aerospace systems.

Prof. Pinhas Ben-Tzvi (MAE) has been invited to serve as a member of the Technical Program Committee for the 2014 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Biomimetics (ROBIO 2014), to be held in Bali, Indonesia, December 5-10.
Prof. Ken Chong (MAE) was invited by the Hong Kong Government University Grants Committee (UGC) as a member of an Engineering Panel to conduct the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in Hong Kong during the week of August 25. The RAE is intended to assess the quality of research of the eight universities in Hong Kong funded by UGC by cost center (similar to a department or group), and to drive excellence by evaluating their outputs (e.g. journal papers), inputs (e.g., research funding) and esteem measures (e.g., honors and awards). The results will be one of the factors for the allocation of part of the research portion of the recurrent block grant in a publicly accountable way. The last RAE was conducted in 2007. UGC funding was approximately US $640 million in 2013.

Call for Proposals: The GW Institute for Biomedical Engineering (GWIBE) Interdisciplinary Research Fund is accepting proposals from GW faculty members interested in biomedical engineering research support. The application deadline is 5:00 pm on Wednesday, October 1. The competition is primarily for junior faculty to help them establish an active research program. Each award can be up to $20,000.
Graduate Admissions news: Staff member Anthony Spatola was in Brazil August 24 - September 4 to attend three QS World Grad School Tour fairs in Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, and Sao Paulo. Anthony also visited the EducationUSA center for all of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro, and two PUC universities in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo to explore possible exchanges between the two universities and GW. This week, Graduate Admissions will be recruiting at Clarkson University, Syracuse University, and Rochester Institute of Technology, as well as in Bogota, Colombia and Mexico City, Mexico. Clark Construction Project Executive Mark Goodwin will moderate a discussion about the internal and external considerations the engineers and architects faced during the building's three-year construction. Volunteers Needed for DC I-Corps Fall Cohort
The DC I-Corps Node is a regional program that provides real world, hands-on training on how to successfully commercialize scientific and technical research from universities and national laboratories. All GW professors, research staff, and graduate students with potentially commercializable research are eligible to participate. Some funding is available to support participation in the program for GW researchers with invention disclosures submitted to the GW Office of Technology Transfer.
