Conferences & Presentations:
Prof. David Broniatowski (EMSE) gave a talk as an invited panelist at the 2016 CDC National Immunization Conference, held in Atlanta, GA. His panel session was titled “Featured Session: Social Media and the Internet--Their Influence on Understanding and Acceptance of Public Health Recommendations.”
Prof. Claire Monteleoni (CS) is an invited participant and presenter at the Dagstuhl Seminar on Foundations of Unsupervised Learning, which will take place September 18-23 in Wadern, Germany. Schloss Dagstuhl – Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik GmbH(English: Schloss Dagstuhl – Leibniz Center for Informatics) is one of the world's leading research centers in informatics. It has been hosting invitation-only Dagstuhl Seminars and Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshops since the center's founding in 1990.
Prof. Claire Monteleoni (CS) also will attend the Sixth International Workshop on Climate Informatics on September 22 and 23. The workshop will be held at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, CO. Prof. Monteleoni co-founded the workshop in 2011 and currently serves on the workshop's steering committee and as sole PI of the workshop's NSF grant. In 2015, she co-founded the Climate Informatics Hackathon co-located with the workshop; the second Climate Informatics Hackathon will also be held during this week.
The 2016 Nano@GW conference, held September 8 and 9, explored and discussed research on nanoscale light sources to include lasers and LEDs of the tiniest dimensions. World-renown specialists in the field—including Prof Ming Wu (UCB, keynote speaker), Prof. Vladimir Shalaev (Purdue University), Ritesh Agarwal (University of Pennsylvania), and Jacob Kurgin (Johns Hopkins University—followed the call for papers, and industry representatives such as Dr. Li (IBM Watson) and Peter Heim (Thorlaps CTO) also were present. Three program managers from national funding agencies also attended: Josh Conway (DARPA), Michael Gerhold (ARO), and Prof. Mona Zaghloul (NSF). The conference was organized by Prof. Volker Sorger (ECE), Prof. Ma (Peking University), and Prof. Oulton (Imperial College London), and the Army Research Office (ARO), the optics company Thorlaps, and SEAS sponsored it. The Optical Society of America co-hosted it. Following the meeting, Prof. Sorger led a tour of the SEH that included the clean room and the imaging suite.

BME undergraduate Jordan Williams was invited to serve as a panelist on the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Jazz Issue Forum, held September 15 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center here in Washington, DC. Each panelist represented a different U.S. city, and Jordan, who is a pianist and composer, was asked to represent his home town, Philadelphia. Jordan was the only student selected to sit on the panel.

GW's Human Resources Division and the School of Engineering and Applied Science will host a special briefing session for SEAS faculty and staff to learn more about the benefits changes for 2017. The session is intended to help employees make informed decisions regarding their health benefits in light of changes to the health benefits plans and based on their individual and family needs. An overview of the benefits changes is now available online, and a comprehensive guide will be posted on the benefits website in late September. The university will also offer benefits fairs, forums, and opportunities for one-on-one advising during the open enrollment period, which begins October 3 and runs through October 21. Please direct questions you may have about the briefing to Mr. Aria Varasteh.

The Division of IT and the School of Engineering and Applied Science are proud to announce that GW was chosen as one of only five schools to participate in Modo Labs' The Great Appathon. This October students will be given the opportunity to create an app that will enhance GW in some way. Participants will be granted access to the no-code Modo Campus Engagement platform, where they will create their apps. Any student from the university is welcome to participate. Absolutely no technical skills are required.
