This position is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Professional Research Experience Program (PREP). NIST recognizes that its research staff may want to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest and, therefore, requires those institutions to be recipients of a PREP award. The PREP program involves staff from a wide range of backgrounds conducting scientific research across various fields. Individuals in this position will perform technical work supporting the collaboration's scientific research.
Research Title:
Indoor Air Quality Emission Measurement – Quantifying wildland urban interface fire smoke secondary emissions from building materials and furnishings
The work will entail:
Using large and small chambers to quantify emissions from building materials and furnishings that have been exposed to wildland urban interface (WUI) fire smoke secondary emissions.
Candidates must be eligible to obtain a Department of Commerce background check for facility access.
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Select and expose building materials and furnishings to WUI smoke during field scale events
- Operating large and small emission chambers.
- Operating proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-MS)
- Quantifying emission rates from large PTR-MS data sets from WUI exposed materials
- Present results at internal meetings, and occasional meetings with external stakeholders.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering, Chemistry or a related field
- 1.5 years of relevant emission testing experience.
- Familiarity with large and small emission chambers.
- Familiarity with PTR-MS instrumentation and operation.
- Ability to work with real-time event data at scale.
- Ability to develop tools needed to analyze PTR-MS data.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
