This position is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Professional Research Experience Program (PREP). NIST recognizes that its research staff may want to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest and, therefore, requires those institutions to be recipients of a PREP award. The PREP program involves staff from a wide range of backgrounds conducting scientific research across various fields. Individuals in this position will perform technical work supporting the collaboration's scientific research.

Human-Centered Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence Research Post Doctoral Researcher

 

The work will entail:

The National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) Information Technology Laboratory is seeking a qualified candidate to support the Human-Centered Cybersecurity (HCC) (https://csrc.nist.gov/projects/human-centered-cybersecurity) and Human-Centered AI (HCAI) ) https://www.nist.gov/programs-projects/human-centered-ai) programs. The programs consider human needs, motivations, behaviors, and abilities in cybersecurity and AI. The Post Doctoral Researcher will work on projects at the intersection of cybersecurity and AI to support the development of HCC and AI guidelines and measurement standards of practical value to industry, government, and academia. The candidate for this position will work alongside world-class researchers at NIST. 

Candidates must be eligible to obtain a Department of Commerce background check for facility access.


Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

 

  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative human subjects research (e.g., surveys, interviews) including study design, data collection, and analysis using statistical methods and qualitative thematic analysis
  • Search for, summarize, and synthesize research literature
  • Write/prepare reports, research papers, and presentations
  • Present project information at internal and external meetings
     

Qualifications

  • PhD degree (degree awarded by June 2026) in human-centered computing, human-computer interaction, human factors, or related fields
  • Qualitative (e.g., thematic coding) or quantitative (e.g., statistical analysis) human subjects research experience in cybersecurity and AI
  • Experience reading, summarizing, and synthesizing research and industry reports/literature
  • Demonstrated ability to work both in teams and independently
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to write research reports and present research
