Prof. Samer Hamdar (CEE) participated in the Transportation Research Board meeting, held in Washington, DC, January 11th – 15th. At the meeting, he presented the paper “Individual Variations Versus Collective Traffic Patterns: Effect of Driver Heterogeneity in a Risk-Taking Environment."
Members of the Institute for Magnetics recently presented the following papers at the INTERMAG/MMM Conference, Washington, DC, January 19th – 22nd:

Prof. Michael Stankosky (EMSE) was a guest speaker at Military C4I conference held in Garmisch, Germany, January 11th – 15th, where he addressed various aspects of knowledge management.

Dan Holtshouse, a 2009 doctoral graduate of EMSE, has been chosen by the editors of the Journal of Knowledge Management as the winner of the 2009 Emerald/EFMD Outstanding Doctoral Research Award in the knowledge management category. Dan’s dissertation is entitled "Knowledge management and the future of the knowledge worker." He is currently a senior research fellow at the GW/SEAS Institute for Knowledge & Innovation.
Scholarship opportunity: Current SEAS graduate students and current SEAS undergraduate seniors who will be graduate students here next year are potentially eligible for the Hyundai Scholarship. The application deadline is February 12th. The purpose of the scholarship is to enable South Korean and American scholars to pursue advanced degrees in specific fields of business administration, management science, and engineering. Awards are made annually to both South Korean and U.S. citizens. Interested applicants must be students in SEAS or the School of Business. Please visit the Hyundai Scholarship website for more information on eligibility and the application process. The award includes full tuition (fees excluded) for one academic year.
Scholarship opportunity: The application period for Computer Security and Information Assurance full scholarships for U.S. citizens is now open. (Rising) juniors, seniors, and graduate students are eligible. This year's forms and information are up the web at http://www.seas.gwu.edu/cybercorps/. The application deadline is February 1st.
Graduate Research Assistantship: Prof. Alex Li (ECE) is seeking a graduate student who is interested in research in computer architecture. The ideal candidate would have good knowledge of modern superscalar and multicore microprocessor architectures. The research project involves in-depth investigation and analysis of future parallel computer architectures and/or reliability of future billion-transistor microprocessors. Essential requirements include C/C++ programming knowledge, experience in the use of architecture simulators, and strong analytical/critical thinking skills. In addition, the preferred candidate would have knowledge in OS, compiler, and/or programming languages. One expected outcome of the research project is publications in top-tier conferences and journals in computer architecture. Priority will be given to doctoral students. During the Fall semester of 2009, the MAE Department redesigned its website. The effort was led by Lubos Brieda, a graduate student in the department, under the supervision of the department chairman, Prof. Michael Plesniak. Emphasis was placed on highlighting research opportunities and student activities available in the department. The home page showcases MAE faculty members along with their associated research projects and student activities. Visitors can click on the project images to obtain further details. Information on the facilities available to students and researchers was added, along with links to student organizations. The page features an RSS feed that will be used to announce activities such as seminars and departmental events. Please visit the new MAE web page at http://mae.seas.gwu.edu/. Fresh water…it’s not just for showers anymore
CEE Professor Baoxia Mi’s research focuses on advanced membrane technologies for desalination, water purification, wastewater reclamation, and renewable energy production. While this may sound like a mouthful of jargon, there are very important real-world applications for this work. For example, by using osmotic membrane processes, renewable energy can be extracted where seawater and fresh water meet (see Diagram). If this sounds like “free energy” to you, then you have the general idea. Dr. Mi is working with CEE graduate student Yaolin Liu on this exciting research.
Recent events in Haiti underscore another potential application of her research. Dr. Mi is currently working with a company (HTI) on filtering technology to improve the performance of their emergency hydration bag. This bag could be used in future disaster situations to provide clean water where there is none readily available. The hydration bag is filled with contaminated water, and using forward osmosis membranes currently being researched by Dr. Mi, the contaminants are filtered out, leaving only fresh, safe water.
