Prof. Shelly Heller (CS) has been named a George Washington Award winner for 2009-2010 and will be honored at the university’s Commencement celebration on May 16th. The George Washington Award, one of the most prestigious awards bestowed by the University, was established in 1976 to give special recognition to members of the GW community whose accomplishments on behalf of the institution have had a broad impact and whose service has been above and beyond that which is usual or expected.
Prof. Joost Santos (EMSE) and his Ph.D. advisor (Prof. Yacov Haimes, University of Virginia) contributed an article to a recently published homeland security handbook: J.R. Santos, Y.Y. Haimes, April 2010. “Input-Output Modeling for Interdependent Infrastructure Sectors” Chapter 2.6 in Wiley Handbook of Science and Technology for Homeland Security, 4 Volume Set (J.G. Voeller, ed.). Wiley, Hoboken, NJ.
Prof. Guru Venkataramani (ECE) has been awarded the Oak Ridge Associated Universities Ralph E. Powe junior faculty enhancement award for a proposal that he wrote on performance debugging on multi-core processors.

The GW Institute for Biomedical Engineering is pleased to announce the winners of the 2010 Undergraduate Research Fellowships. They are:
Xiolong Jiang (Sophomore, Computer Science)
Topic: Analysis and Visualization of the Biomechanics of Swimming Motion
Mentor: Prof. James Hahn, Computer Science
Ross Patterson (Sophomore, Mechanical Engineering)
Topic: Peptide Modified Gold Nanowires by Discontinuous Vertical Colloidal Deposition
Mentor: Prof. Mark Reeves, Physics
They will each receive a $5,000 stipend to do research with their mentors.

Thursday, May 13:
The university’s Doctoral Hooding Ceremony begins at 5:00 pm in the Charles E. Smith Center (600 22nd Street, NW). The University will host a reception after the hooding ceremony.
Saturday, May 15:
School of Engineering and Applied Science Celebration: The SEAS Celebration will take begin at 7:30 pm at the Charles E. Smith Center (600 22nd Street, NW). SEAS will host a reception for our graduates and their guests prior to the ceremony, from 4:30 to 6:30 pm, in Duquès Hall (22nd Street, NW between G and H Streets). The keynote speaker for the SEAS Celebration will be Dr. H. Vincent Poor, dean, School of Engineering and Applied Science at Princeton University. Dr. Poor is a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), a Fellow of the IEEE, and is currently a GW Welling Professor.
Sunday, May 16:
Processions step off at the National Mall at 9:30 am, followed by the University Commencement at 10:00 am on the National Mall, between 4th and 7th Streets
