On April 21st, GW students who have achieved outstanding academic success were honored at a dinner hosted by GW President Steven Knapp and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Donald Lehman. Each year, GW hosts this dinner to recognize the academic performance of those undergraduates in the top two percent by GPA of the sophomore, junior, and senior classes. These students are designated Outstanding Academic Achievement Awardees and receive a certificate and a gift from the University at the dinner. This year, nine SEAS students were designated Outstanding Academic Achievement Awardees. They are: Alta Berger, Xiolong Jiang, Jatuporn Leksut, Claire Powers, William Rone, Jan Michael Rubio, Nathaniel Soares, Scott Trocchia, and Kimberly Turley.
Additionally, each GW school selects a Distinguished Scholar to offer brief remarks at the dinner. This year Alta Berger, a senior in BME, was selected as the SEAS Distinguished Scholar. She was introduced by Dean Dolling, who highlighted her outstanding accomplishments in research, coursework, service, and extracurricular activities. We congratulate Alta and all the SEAS Outstanding Academic Achievement Awardees!
Danielle Abadi, a BME senior working with Prof. Vesna Zderic (ECE), presented her senior design work at the 159th Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), held April 19th – 23rd in Baltimore, MD. The title of her talk was: "Ultrasound-mediated nail drug delivery system to treat fungal disorders." Danielle's work was chosen as one of 14 abstracts (out of 1,650 presented) to be featured in Highlights of the 159th ASA Meeting and NOISE-CON 2010. Danielle's project was supported by a 2009 GW Institute for Biomedical Engineering undergraduate fellowship.
Two GW-CS sophomores—Chantree Chandrapunth (aka Chan or Chan3) and Jatuporn Leksut (aka Toy)—won third place this year at the "Games 4 Girls" competition hosted annually by the Computer Science department of the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. The competition invites entries from teams of five or fewer college women. Each entry is a computer game meant to be enjoyable to girls in high school and middle school, and the competition is judged by high school girls. Chan and Toy will receive an award of $1,000, a plaque and a computer game from EA Sports. More information may be found at http://cs.illinois.edu/outreach/games4girls.
Eric Rosenfield, a junior in CEE, has received a George Gamow Undergraduate Research Fellowship to support his summer research. Eric works with Prof. Baoxia Mi (CEE) on making anti-biofouling nanocomposite membranes using silver nanoparticles.
Radia Abdul Wahab, a master’s student co-advised by Dr. Matthew Myers (from the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health) and Prof. Vesna Zderic (ECE), presented her research work, entitled "Effects of a simulated blast pulse train on a simple neural model," at the 159th Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America.

Fun facts: GW is gearing up for Commencement and would like your help providing GW fun facts, which will be used by WJLA during its live broadcast of the ceremony on the Mall. GW is looking for fun facts from SEAS--about research, noteworthy student or faculty achievements, etc. The only requirement is that the facts need to be brief (one line). Looking for a place to publish or present interesting work in information security or information warfare? Consider submitting your work to the 6th International Conference on Information Warfare and Security. It will be held at GW in March 2011, which makes it a pretty convenient venue!
