Research & Grants:
Profs. James Lee (MAE) and Azim Eskandarian (CEE) have won a $1.3 million, competitively selected cooperative agreement, entitled "Nano Material Modeling and Simulation by New Multiple Length/Time Scale Theories and Algorithms," from the advanced research program of the U.S. Department of Transportation. This research will develop fundamental theories and algorithms for multi-scale modeling of the mechanics/physics of nanomaterials and will extend the findings to investigate the performance of various materials for transportation applications. Multiple doctoral students and researchers will be supported under this collaborative effort.
Papers & Publications:
Prof. Azim Eskandarian (CEE) and his doctoral student Damoon Soudbakhsh published a new paper: "A Collision Avoidance Steering Controller Using Linear Quadratic Regulator," D. Soudbakhsh and A. Eskandarian. Damoon Soudbakhsh presented the paper in the intelligent vehicles session at the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) 2010 Annual Congress, Detroit, MI, April 13th – 15th.
Profs. Ed Della Torre and Larry Bennett (ECE) have had the following paper published: P.J. Chen, Y. Jin, L. H. Bennett, E. Della, Torre, “Calculation of the Error in the Zero-Crossing Method of Computing the Magnetic Thermal Fluctuation,” IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 46, pp. 1155 - 1158 (2010).

Officers of the GW IEEE Student Branch—Alta Berger, Ivan Suarez, Noel Behailu, Matt Wilkins, and Anne Myung, accompanied by the student branch counselor, Prof. Nicholas Kyriakopoulos (ECE)—participated in the 2010 Region 1 and Region 2 IEEE Students Activities Conference held at Temple University, Philadelphia, on April 16th - 18th. More than fifty universities from the Northeast region of the U.S. participated. The team of Noel Behailu, Anne Myung, and Matt Wilkins won first prize in the Ethics Competition. Congratulations!
This year, for the first time, SEAS bachelor of arts students have been allowed into the Phi Beta Kappa pool to be considered for induction into the national honor society. SEAS is pleased to announce that in its first year of consideration, one of our students, Blake Dietrich, an EMSE applied science and technology BA student, will be inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Congratulations to Blake.

Networking Happy Hour: Please join SEAS alumni and current SEAS students for a networking happy hour at Tonic at Quigley's Pharmacy, from 6:30-8:00 pm on Thursday, April 22nd. We are highlighting alumni and students of SEAS student organizations, but we invite everyone to join the fun and networking. The event is free of charge, but we ask that you register your attendance in advance. Hors d'oeuvres will be provided and a cash bar is available. The cover article of the most recently released issue of The Voice of Technology, published by the Northern Virginia Technology Council, is “Information Assured: As cyberattacks grow in number and impact, universities shift to the front lines of defense." On pages 10-18, the article mentions, the GW program and the efforts of GMU, Georgetown, Marymount, Northern Virginia Community College, University of Virginia, and Virginia Tech. It also briefly mentions the GW CyberCorps program.
