MLK National Day of Service

January 13, 2023

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr

Dear GW Engineering Community,

As we commemorate the remarkable life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. we are reminded why being connected to and engaged with our communities is critical to the mission of our school. Dr. King’s leadership and selfless acts left an indelible mark, and his legacy of service continues to be a guiding light for us and for people around the world.  Here, at GW Engineering, our faculty, staff, and students are focused on creating – through research, innovation, education, and community engagement – a better world that is equitable and safe and that enables a higher quality of life for all.

MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage everyone to volunteer to improve their communities.  So on Monday, I encourage each of you to volunteer your time and talents to lend a hand and help someone. Engage with your community and create constructive action. Act on Dr. King’s legacy of social justice and equity. Volunteer to serve others. You can clean up a public space, mentor a young person, or help those who are food insecure.

Whatever you do and however you choose to spend your time on this National Day of Service, please note that every little bit counts. There is no act of service that is too small to make a difference. In the words of Dr. King:

Everybody can be great because everybody can serve…You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love.”

Enjoy your weekend and Happy MLK Day of Service!
