Research:
GW’s National Crash Analysis Center (NCAC) has received a one-year, $200,000 technology transfer grant from the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences (NCMS). Under this grant, the NCAC will work with two industrial partners—L&L Products, Inc., and Ontonix—to develop advanced material models to be used in automotive safety applications. The industrial partners are funded separately by NCMS. NCMS spearheads technology development by serving as a provider of collaborative research, information, knowledge and expertise to the North American manufacturing and defense community, and it has spearheaded numerous technology developments.

Prof. Azim Eskandarian (CEE) delivered an invited talk (seminar), entitled "Intelligent Vehicles Active Safety: A Signal Processing Method for Unobtrusive Detection of Driver Drowsiness," at the Robotics Institute of Carnegie Mellon University on February 19th.
Prof. Roger Lang (ECE) is the chair of the 11th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing (MicroRad), which will be held this week (March 1st – 4th) here in Washington, DC. The meeting, held alternately in the US and Italy, typical has about 150 attendees. The goal of MicroRad 2010 is to offer the microwave radiometry community an opportunity to share new research results, instrument designs, and innovative techniques and technologies in the field of passive microwave remote sensing. Special attention will be focused on applications to remote sensing of land, ocean, atmosphere, and the cryosphere. The proceedings of the meeting will be archived by IEEE in its digital library, IEEE Xplore, and plans are being made to publish selected, peer-reviewed papers in a special issue of the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing.
Prof. James Lee (MAE) and his doctoral student, James Chen, presented a paper on "Fundamental theory of Nanogenerator" at the APS April Meeting, held February 13th – 17th in Washington, D.C.
Prof. Mona Zaghloul (ECE chair) is the co-author with her doctoral student, Steve Arnold, of “Design and Performance of a Simple, Room-Temperature Gallium Oxide Nanowire Gas Sensor.” The paper has been selected to receive an award from the Naval Research Lab at the 2010 Annual Research Publications Award Dinner, to be held on March 19th.

First Lady Michelle Obama promised to speak at the University Commencement if GW students, faculty, and staff perform 100,000 hours of community service during the 2009-2010 academic year. Professor Roger Kaufman of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department is leading a volunteer project open to students, faculty, and staff which will help GW achieve that goal while providing a satisfying way for SEAS engineers to utilize their skills.
“Bridging the Gap: Creative Technological Aids for Children with Neuromuscular Handicaps” is a joint project intended to bring together the creative talents of SEAS students and faculty with assistive technology needs identified by physical and occupational therapists at Children’s National Medical Center. We are designing and building a variety of electromechanical devices and therapeutic toys that strengthen muscles, enhance confidence and self-esteem, make therapy fun, and improve the quality of life for children with disabilities.
