Conferences & Presentations:
On March 22, Dr. David Broniatowski (EMSE) gave the invited panel talk “Navigating Social Media: Trolls, Bots & Misinformation” at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health. The meeting was held in Arlington, VA.
Dr. Payman Dehghanian (ECE) attended and served as the student program chair of the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Electric Safety Workshop, held March 4-8 in Jacksonville, FL.
Dr. Miloš Doroslovački (ECE) and his student Li Li attended the 53rd Annual Conference on Information Sciences and Systems, held March 20-22 in Baltimore, MD. At the conference, Li presented the following paper: L. Li, M. Doroslovački, and M. Loew. “Discriminant Analysis Deep Neural Networks.” Also at the conference, Dr. Doroslovački chaired the session “Learning Systems.”
Dr. Chung Hyuk Park (BME) attended the 2019 IEEE International Conference on Human Robot Interaction (HRI '19), held March 11-14 in Daegu, Korea. At the HRI workshops, he presented two papers, titled “Therapeutic robots in the wild: Perils of delivering autism interventions in the real world” (co-authored with his doctoral student Hifza Javed and collaborator Myounghoon Jeon of Virginia Tech) and “Motivation-based Social Expression for Agent’s Learning Performance Representation" (co-authored with his former post-doc Dr. WonHyong Lee). At the conference, he co-organized a workshop with Dr. Paul Robinette (MIT) and served as a panelist in another workshop, titled “Test Methods and Metrics for Effective HRI in Collaborative Human-Robot Teams" and organized by Dr. Jeremy Marvel of NIST. His “Late-Breaking Report,” titled “Humanoid Therapy Robot for Encouraging Exercise in Dementia Patients” and co-authored with Mariah Schrum and Dr. Ayanna Howard (Georgia Tech), won the 2nd Place LBR Award.

The Los Angeles Times quoted Dr. David Broniatowski (EMSE) in the March 19 article, "Facts about fake news's influence on U.S. elections and the fight against misinformation." Dr. Broniatowski spoke about his research on the impact that social media bots and Russian trolls have had on vaccine discussions on Twitter.

ECE senior Reem Eltahir was featured in the March 18 GW Today article “How I Got the Job: From Tech Internship to Employment Offer.”
At the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) Electric Safety Workshop, ECE doctoral student Bo Wang presented his paper, “Electrical Safety Considerations in Large-Scale Electric Vehicle Charging Stations," and was awarded the 2019 IEEE-IAS Myron Zucker Award on Electrical Safety through Design Student Initiative. Bo is advised by Dr. Payman Dehghanian (ECE).
The 2019 World Bank Group's Young Women in Technology (WITY) summer internship program offers practical, guided, hands-on exposure and involvement in corporate IT projects. The program is designed to enhance the educational experience of college students and help establish a future pipeline of entry level IT workers from diverse backgrounds. The application deadline is April 7.
SEAS Events Re-cap
The 5th GW – Korea University (KU) Research Symposium was held March 11-12 in Seoul, Korea. SEAS alumnus Simon Lee and KU hosted the event at the KU campus. The latest research progress of five KU-GW research teams were highlighted at the symposium and plans were made for future research collaborations. The GW team was led by Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies Can Korman, and included Dr. Samer Hamdar (CEE), Dr. Michael Keidar (MAE), Dr. Murray Loew (BME), Michael Orrill (senior PhD student representing Dr. Saniya LeBlanc of MAE), and Dr. Volker Sorger (ECE). The symposium included joint presentations by the GW team members and their respective KU collaborators, laboratory tours, and a reception that included KU President Jin Taek Chung, College of Engineering Dean Joong Hoon Kim, and other KU leadership and local dignitaries. The next research symposium is expected to take place at GW during the spring 2020 semester.
The Election Verification Network held its annual conference at the SEH on March 14-15. Speakers included US Senator Ron Wyden (OR), who opened the conference by announcing the launch of a modified version of the Protecting American Votes and Elections (PAVE) Act; US Representative Jamie Raskin (MD-8); David Sanger, a Pulitzer-prize-winning journalist at the New York Times and author of The Perfect Weapon: War, Sabotage and Fear in the Cyber Age; Suzanne Spaulding, currently with Center for Strategic and International Studies and previously undersecretary of the Department for Homeland Security (DHS); Commissioners Hovland, Palmer, and Hicks of the Election Assistance Commission; and Matt Masterson of DHS. Dr. Poorvi Vora (CS) and Liz Howard (Brennan Center for Justice) co-chaired the conference, which also included panel discussions on federal legislation; litigation in the states; accessibility and verifiability; standards; and technology and audits held in 2018. On March 19, at the inaugural lecture of the CS Department’s Internet Distinguished Speaker Series, Vint Cerf spoke to a GW audience about the future of the Internet. He discussed ethical solutions as the key to the advancement of computer science. The event was held in collaboration with the GW chapter of the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery). The GW COMPASS GALA is the premier STEM networking event hosted at GW. 2019 GW Summer Startup Accelerator: The GW Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship is now accepting applications for the 2019 GW Summer Startup Accelerator (GWSSA). GWSSA is an intensive, residential, nine-week program for a select group of GW student entrepreneurs who want to “go all in” to develop a fundable startup venture.
