This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.

 

Research Title:

Faculty Research Associate – Hardware for AI

 

Candidates must be eligible to obtain a Department of Commerce background check for facility access.

 

The work will entail:

An electronics engineering researcher is being sought to participate in an ongoing research program in Hardware for Artificial Intelligence in the Alternative Computing Group.   This program addresses critical needs in emerging technology required to support the rapidly expanding demands of cutting-edge artificial intelligence. New devices and architectures are emerging at a rapid pace and NIST is developing the necessary measurement techniques and platforms to address key metrology issues for these new technologies.

 

The successful candidate will work closely with Alternative Computing Group to develop and implement measurements on magnetic tunnel junction and resistive switching devices integrated with customized CMOS wafers.  The work will contribute to current NIST research projects and will be synergistic with ongoing NIST collaborations with external researchers and practitioners.  The appointment is suitable for a faculty member on sabbatical who would be expected to spend at least 34% of their time at NIST working on NIST-related projects. 

 

Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Development of experimental protocols for characterization of individual devices such as memristors and magnetic tunnel junctions under various environments and bias conditions.
  • Participation in planning for and implementation of nanofabrication of various novel hardware for AI devices.
  • Planning and carrying out measurements on scaled systems consisting of novel devices integrated on custom CMOS chips to realize alternative computing architectures
  • Presentation of results at internal meetings, and occasional meetings with external stakeholders.
  • Ensuring that results, protocols, software, and documentation have been archived or otherwise transmitted to the larger organization.

 

Qualifications

  • A PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • 20 or more peer-reviewed publications on neuromorphic or AI hardware-related topics.
  • Ability to conceptualize and realize novel nanoscale device measurements.
  • Experience with fabrication of resistive memory devices, in particular as integrated with custom CMOS chips.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current state of the art in neuromorphic hardware for artificial intelligence.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
