Civil & Environmental Engineering

Civil Engineering students in their last three semesters complete a series of design challenges focused on the environmental, structural and transportation aspects of real-world infrastructure. As teams, students will name and design logos for their engineering firms before completing a professional-grade project that draws on skills and concepts developed in previous coursework. Completed projects are presented to Civil Engineering faculty members, industry mentors and the CEE Board, allowing students to simulate communicating their results to professional clients.

Senior Design Project 2025 - Oakwood Road Intersection and Roundabout Development

Civil & Environmental Engineering students graduating in Spring 2025 were tasked to complete a comprehensive redesign of two major intersections on Oakwood Road in Millersville, MD. The designs were required to introduce a four-way signalized intersection and roundabout at the respective locations while balancing additional concerns, such as environmental needs and wear and tear. Students used industry software and techniques to simulate traffic throughput, model drainage solutions, determine pavement requirements, and more. Some groups additionally included dedicated U-turn opportunities and protected bike lanes to improve commuter safety and accommodate multiple modes of transit. Students completed their solutions in keeping with industry standards and state and local regulation, and presented them to their faculty and peers at a dedicated poster session to conclude the experience.
