Papers:
Prof. Kie Eom (ECE) published the paper "Anisotropic Adaptive Filtering for Speckle Reduction in Synthetic Aperture Radar Images" in Optical Engineering, Vol. 50, No. 5, May 2011.
Research:
Prof. Edward Della Torre (ECE) received a three-year, $250,000 grant from the Office of Naval Research to do collaborative work with the U.S. Navy's Carderock Division.
Conferences & Presentations:
The 6th International Conference on Information Warfare and Security, held at GW on March 17 and 18, was a smashing success. Prof. Julie Ryan (EMSE chair), as conference chair, presided over a conference that featured speakers from 15 different countries, ranging from Finland to South Africa and representing every continent (except Antarctica). She also presented the paper, "Neutrality in the Context of Cyberwar," coauthored with Prof. Dan Ryan of the National Defense University. The two-day conference featured sessions on cyberwarfare, malware, computer and network security, data security, cloud computing, and covert channels. GW students were invited to attend the conference for free and many took advantage of that offer. In particular, Computer Science doctoral students Eugen Leontie and Gedare Bloom actively participated in the conference, leading the session on Ph.D. works in progress.
Student News
Abraham Todd and Michael Zarrella (ECE) received scholarships from the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI). CRSI awards scholarships annually to senior-level undergraduate students who have shown interest in the reinforced concrete industry through academic study and work experience. Abraham and Michael demonstrated their interest in the concrete industry by taking Prof. Sameh Badie's (CEE) concrete courses and conducting summer research with Prof. Pedro Silva (CEE).

Prof. Abdelghani Bellaachia is a full time faculty member in the Department of Computer Science. His main research areas include bio-inspired data mining, recommender systems using social networks, and multi-lingual data mining.
Prof. Bellaachia and his doctoral student Anasse Bari have recently had a paper accepted at the 2011 IEEE Symposium on Swarm Intelligence, which will be will held in Paris, France, April 11-15, 2011. The paper introduces a new biologically-inspired data mining algorithm, called SFLOSCAN, which uses bird flocking behavior to detect communities in dynamic social networks.
Prof. Bellaachia was recently invited to join the scientific committee of the Conference Sciences of Electronics, Technologies of Information and Telecommunications (SETIT 2011).
Throughout the year, Prof. Bellaachia conducts bi-weekly research meetings with his doctoral students. Students have a chance to present their research, learn from each other, and receive research guidelines from him.
