Awards & Honors:
Prof. Michael Keidar (MAE) recently received a $30,000 Novel Clinical and Translational Methodologies Award from the Clinical and Translational Science Institute at Children's National (CTSI-CN). His award is for "Cold Plasma Cancer Therapy."

Conferences & Presentations:
Daniel Bivolaru (MAE research scientist) presented a paper, coauthored by Prof. Andrew Cutler (MAE) and Paul Danehy (NASA), at the 49th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting on January 4-7 in Orlando, FL. The paper is entitled "Spatially- and Temporally-resolved Multi-parameter Interferometric Rayleigh Scattering" (AIAA Paper 2011-0802).
Guest Vignette
This past fall, Prof. Pinhas Ben-Tzvi took on a new role as coach and mentor to a group of approximately 20 high school students participating in the First Robotics Competition (FRC) at School Without Walls (SWW). The FRC program is led by SWW teacher Matthew Ambrosio and challenges the students to design a team brand, build and program a robot able to perform a set of tasks against several competing robots, and raise funds to support their efforts. Over the course of the academic year, Prof. Ben-Tzvi is guiding the team through this entire process. He has also recruited several graduate and undergraduate students working in his Robotics and Mechatronics Lab and other SEAS programs to work alongside him. Through Prof. Ben-Tzvi's involvement, students gain access to GW's Robotics and Mechatronics Lab. The program also conducts workshops and seminars on several basic topics in robotics, such as design, hardware, and programming. These training programs, held at both SWW and SEAS, include sessions on: CAD modeling using AutoDesk Inventor and simulations using 3D Studio Max; motors and drive train, hardware and wiring, and pneumatics; and programming options including LabVIEW, JAVA and C/C++. FRC gives high-school students the rare chance to learn directly from professional engineers and gain invaluable insights into "real world" engineering while honing their skills in project management, programming, teamwork, and strategic thinking.
