Publications:
Prof. Pinhas Ben-Tzvi (MAE) and Will Rone, an undergraduate MAE student, have published a paper in Microsystem Technologies Journal. The citation is: Ben-Tzvi, P., Rone, W., "Microdroplet Generation in Gaseous and Liquid Environments", Microsystem Technologies Journal, DOI10.1007/s00542-009-0962-7. The article was published online on December 13, 2009, and is now available on SpringerLink. Will Rone works with Prof. Ben-Tzvi in the Robotics and Mechatronics Lab on a research project that involves the development of precision mechatronic devices for microdroplets generation to be used for the production of biochips. This project is funded by GW’s UFF/Dilthey award. Prof. Ben-Tzvi notes, “This is an excellent achievement for Mr. Rone to publish a journal paper as an undergraduate student.”

Prof. Joost Santos (EMSE) published a paper entitled "Incorporating Time-Varying Perturbations Into the Dynamic Inoperability Input–Output Model." It appeared in the January 2010 issue of IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics (Part A), 40(1): pp. 100-106. Prof. Suresh Subramaniam (ECE) recently has co-authored the following papers:

Conferences & Presentations:
Prof. David Nagel (ECE) serves as an external examiner and PhD adviser at the MultiMedia University in Cyberjaya, Malaysia. He presented a lecture there on "NanoMaterials and MEMS" on December 1st of last year, followed by another lecture two days later on "NanoMaterial-Enabled Chemical and Biological Sensors.” On December 7th, he gave a keynote lecture on "Low Energy Nuclear Reactions" at the International Conference on Energy and the Environment 2009 in Melaka, Malaysia.
Prof. Michael Plesniak (MAE chair) attended the 48th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting on January 4th-7th in Orlando, FL. He chaired Session 227-FD-47: Environmental and Fundamental Turbulence. Prof. Plesniak serves as a member of several committees, and participated in the AIAA (national) Public Policy Committee meeting, the annual meeting of the Aerospace Department Chairs Association (ADCA), the Fluid Dynamics Technical Committee (FDTC) Plenary meeting, and FDTC Experimental and Theoretical Fluid Dynamics subcommittee meeting. He was selected as the FDTC liaison to ASME and to the Public Policy Committee.
Prof. Suresh Subramaniam (ECE) was general chair of the Third IEEE International Conference on Advanced Networks and Telecom Systems (IEEE ANTS 2009) held in New Delhi, India, December 14th-16th of last year.
Other News:
The US Air Force and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) have invited Prof. Pinhas Ben-Tzvi (MAE)to be a member of the review panel for the 2010 Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship Program (SFFP), which will be held this month. Prof. Ben-Tzvi has also been invited to be a panelist for the 2010 National Science Foundation East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI), to be held this month as well.
Prof. Ken Chong (MAE) has recently been appointed an advisory board member of the Materials Technology Center at the Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He will be attending the board meeting on January 13th-14th.
Prof. Joost Santos (EMSE) was invited to serve as a panelist in the National Science Foundation research program in December 2009 and in the US Air Force research program, which will be held this month.

Student News
Arush Gadkar, a doctoral student in electrical engineering advised by Prof. Suresh Subramaniam, presented the paper "A Comparison of Optical Time Slotted Networks" at IEEE ANTS 2009 in New Delhi, India, on December 15th of last year.
Prof. Sameh Badie (CEE) announces that his former student, Seth Rogge, was recently promoted to director of building information modeling with the DC firm, The SK&A Group. Seth received both his BS and MS in civil engineering at GW.

Scholarship opportunity: Current SEAS graduate students and current SEAS undergraduate seniors who will be graduate students here next year are potentially eligible for the Hyundai Scholarship. The application deadline is February 12th. The purpose of the scholarship is to enable South Korean and American scholars to pursue advanced degrees in specific fields of business administration, management science, and engineering. Awards are made annually to both South Korean and U.S. citizens. Interested applicants must be students in SEAS or the School of Business. Please visit the Hyundai Scholarship website for more information on eligibility and the application process. The award includes full tuition (fees excluded) for one academic year.
