This week, we’ve spoken with Caitlin Carfano, BS ‘20, an electrical engineering major who has received many academic honors during her time at the university. “I was attracted to GW’s engineering program because of the close-knit community of SEAS,” she reflects. Carfano will soon begin a full-time role as an engineer at Lockheed Martin’s offices in the greater Philadelphia area.

During her time at SEAS, Carfano was named an A. James Clark Scholar and received both a Presidential Academic Scholarship and the Professor Burton I. Edelson Memorial Scholarship. She was also inducted into the Tau Beta Pi engineering honors society. Having achieved the highest grade point average of all senior electrical engineering majors, Carfano was also honored with the Benjamin C. Cruickshanks award and the Philip Kaplan Prize in Electrical Engineering.

In addition to excelling academically, Carfano served as a resource for peers as part of the student mentoring program SEASSPAN and was a member of engineering sorority Alpha Omega Epsilon. As a first-year, she co-founded a volunteer organization for GW students, Atoms to Astronauts, which is designed to strengthen elementary school students’ STEM education and to increase their interest in STEM subjects. Through the program, GW students volunteered to lead STEM after school activities at several Washington, DC elementary schools.
