Event Description

The School of Engineering and Applied Science is honored to host Retired US Navy Lieutenant Commander Alex Dietrich, BS ’01, MBA ’14, an engineer, professor, and former F/A-18F strike fighter pilot, to deliver its annual Frank Howard Distinguished Lecture & Reception.

LCDR Alex Dietrich will discuss “The Unexpected Journey: From Strike Fighter Pilot to Change Champion,” reflecting on her path beginning as a GW athlete and civil engineering student to unforeseen real-world applications including serving three combat deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. From academic theory to field application, the path from competence to confidence is often long and rarely straightforward. LCDR Dietrich will discuss engineering in service to society, and how, more than ever, issues of safety, equity, trust, resilience, ethics and social responsibility weigh on today’s engineers and innovators.

The Frank Howard Distinguished Lecture Series is an endowed lecture fund established in 1945 by a gift from its namesake to bring outstanding leaders of science and industry to GW to discuss timely topics in engineering and allied subjects.

A note about COVID-19: The health and well-being of GW students, alumni, friends, faculty, and staff remains a top priority for GW and all alumni events will proceed in compliance with all state, local, and public health guidelines.
