Media Mentions:
Prof. Shelly Heller (CS) was interviewed for Straight Talk, a program on the news network Voice of America that concerns women and minorities in STEM fields. The show can be viewed in Persian on Voice of America's website, www.voanews.com/persian, at 1:00 pm today or, thereafter, in their archive.
Awards:
Prof. Lijie Grace Zhang (MAE) was chosen to receive the 2011 Young Investigator Award from the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research Forum on Aging and Skeletal Health. The award is supported by a grant from the National Institute on Aging, the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
Other:
Prof. Lijie Grace Zhang (MAE) was invited to serve as a panelist for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (bioengineering panel) February 13-15 and the NSF Biomechanics and Mechanobiology Program in January.
Prof. Chunlei Liang (MAE) served on the one-day peer-review panel, "Modeling and Simulation of Industrially-Relevant Problems," for the Department of Energy's Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program on February 8. The SBIR program accelerates the development of innovative products for the U.S. commercial marketplace.
Prof. Joost Santos (EMSE) has been selected as a 2011 Policy Research Scholar for the GW Institute of Public Policy. Faculty selected as scholars serve for one year and are awarded $10,000 to further their research either through a summer stipend or course release. The program is extremely competitive program and only one other member of the SEAS faculty, Prof. Jon Deason (EMSE), has been selected in the program's ten-year history.

It is common knowledge that the amount of traffic that the Internet must support is increasing day-by-day, due in part to its increased accessibility to more users and in part to users who are transferring data in new ways, such as streaming video when using Netflix. Demand this high can be handled only by a fiber-optic network, which is widely deployed as the backbone of today's Internet. Due to rapid geographic and temporal variations in traffic demands, it is also becoming increasingly hard for network designers to quickly provision the necessary resources to handle this demand when and where it is needed. In response to these challenges, researchers have developed a new technology, Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer (ROADM), which allows bandwidth and other resources to be rapidly re-provisioned as demand changes; however, there has not been much of an understanding of how many ROADM nodes to deploy and where to locate them.
Professor Subramaniam and his group studied this problem and developed mathematical models that could be used to quickly estimate the benefits of deploying ROADMs at select network locations and developed intelligent algorithms that selected these locations in a way that optimized the cost-benefit ratio. These results, recently published in the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, essentially show that the number of ROADMs required is only a small fraction of the number previously thought necessary.
