David Broniatowski, professor of engineering management and systems engineering (EMSE), and Joseph Simons, an EMSE Ph.D. student, recently published an op-ed in TechPolicy.Press titled “A Building Code for Digital Infrastructures.” In the op-ed, they explore current efforts to manage online risks without restricting free speech, citing their research to explain why these efforts are likely to fail due to platforms' underlying architecture, and argue for a building code for the digital age.

Here is an excerpt from the article: “This approach can build on familiar engineering and safety frameworks and existing guiding principles for platform design–such as the Neely Design Code for Social Media; and those developed by the International Code Council (ICC). Courts, agencies, and public procurement already use ICC frameworks. In these systems, technical experts and engineers develop standards based on scientifically-validated best practices.”
