Dr. Igor Efimov, chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, is working closely with faculty from top engineering schools on two new grants with total funding of more than $8 million.

Professor Efimov and colleagues from Johns Hopkins University and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign recently received a $6 million Leducq grant as part of the Transatlantic Network of Excellence program. The GW share of the grant is $1 million, and Professor Efimov is the U.S. coordinator of the program. The award is for "RHYTHM," which is an acronym for Repolarization HeterogeneitY imaging for personalized Therapy of Heart arrhythMia.

Teaming up with colleagues from Johns Hopkins University and Imperial College of London, Professor Efimov won a second grant recently, this one worth more than $2.7 million. Their project, “Exploration of Arrhythmogenic Triggers and Substrates in Heart Failure,” is funded by the National Institutes of Health, and Professor Efimov’s laboratory will receive an estimated $828,000 for the project.
